Though they released just one album, 2000's Since I Left You, The Avalanches' legacy is difficult to overstate. The album took form during a transitional period in the new millennium; when rap music seemed to have died down, polished indie had replaced the stripped-down rawness of grunge, and the 1990s rave scene had ran its course. Since I Left You stood the test of time against this transitional period - an album brimming with long-forgotten and obscure harmonies, reworked into a masterful portrait of sounds. This use of plunderphonics, as it's since been named, involves the use of taking existing audio recordings and altering them in some way to form a new composition. The album would use sampling extensively, containing an estimated 3,500 samples from obscure vinyl collected from various dollar bins and Salvation Army crates across Australia.
Where 1996's Endtroducing... showcases a brilliant usage of plunderphonics to create sombre and mellow music, Since I Left You boasts warm and bittersweet symphonies. Its legacy would hinge on the fact that they would never make another album again. However, this may not be true in the near future, as The Avalanches have announced their participation in three festival lineups. Check below for a list of festivals including The Avalanches.
